Rededication of the GCIA Memorial - National Arboretum

Post date: Mar 20, 2016 11:56:15 AM

The memorial was refurbished to fulfil members’ wishes that a more permanent memorial be constructed within the low wall. The funds were raised by members of the Association, their families and friends. George Martin, a local member of the Association volunteered to oversee the project and assist with the build. The build was carried out by Andrew Brown-Jackson, Andrew has a long association with the NMA and has built several of the memorials on the site. The plinth and column were built using handpicked Derbyshire Limestone which is a very close match to the natural stone on the island of Malta, with the legend, HONOURING THOSE WHO DEFENDED AND SUPPLIED MALTA DURING WW11. The plaque on top of the column was supplied by Allan Cannell of Memorials in Lichfield. It is mid grey polished granite showing the GCIA badge in colour.

The George Cross Island Association will be holding a re-dedication service at 12.00.Hrs. on Monday 13th June 2016 at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Litchfield, Staffordshire. DE13 7AR. We sincerely hope that all those that have contributed and are able, will attend, to see this magnificent memorial, which is in remembrance of all those who died in defence of the Island Fortress of Malta, and those of the Association that served and who have died since.
