Former Malta President Censu Tabone died at his home in St. Julians on March 14th 2012. He was 98.
Dr Tabone was born in Victoria on March 30, 1913. His father was Gozitan while his mother was from Cospicua.
He was the only minister to have served under both Dr George Borg Olivier (as minister of Labour) and under Eddie Fenech Adami, as foreign minister. He was the first Nationalist Party politician to become head of state.
Tabone, an ophthalmologist by profession, was a military doctor during World War II before he contested the election on behalf of the Nationalist Party in 1962.
He was a labor minister in the 1960s and foreign minister in the late 1980s, before being appointed president in 1989.
In December 1989, he hosted a superpower summit of U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who together declared the end of the Cold War.
Tabone is survived by his wife of 70 years, Maria, eight children, 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

On 25th December the last post sounded for Ronnie, he was a committed and dedicated member of the Association taking on the post of Midland Branch, Chairman and Secretary and Editor of the The Middle Watch. He represented the Branch on the National Council and was elected Vice President Army, a post he held until his death. He attended the Malta Reunions until a few years ago and anyone who joined the band of brothers in their watering hole in Malta, will remember only part of those memorable occasions. I attended a service of thanksgiving for his life at Holy Trinity Church Lambley along with other members of the association; we agreed the service reflected his stature of the man the church was full. The words of remembrance spoken by friends and family we could all relate to, a dear life long friend, Ronnie worked tirelessly for the Associations he joined, well respected in the local community, and will be sadly missed by all those lives he touched.

Anglia Branch, Bert has crossed the bar; another well respected quiet GCIA Submariner who many of you will remember for his red blazer. He was honoured at his funeral by the Submariners, RBL, GCIA, Ganges, and HMS Sussex Associations, in which he served, who were present at his Service of Thanksgiving.
