My Dad was on Malta during the siege. I grew up on stories about it. He was a sergent in THE ROYAL SIGNALS. One of his favourite tales was one day he was down a hole laying cables. Up to his neck in muck when he was summoned to come up. He started to climb out of this deep hole . These are his words. '' I climbed up into the sunshine and saw the shiniest boots I have ever seen . I stood up and there was the King''. ''What are you doing Sergant '' he asked. ''I'm laying cables Sir '' my Dad replied. ''Can I come and help you Sergent '' asked the King. ''Its very muddy down there Sir '' said my Dad ''Thats fine'' said his majesty. The King climbed down the hole and my Dad started to show him how to weld the cables. The King did a couple and then thanks my Dad and climbed out of the hole and went on his way.
The punch line to this story was. '' He made a right balls of them '' It alwayd raised a laugh especially at his funeral.
The other story was about Senor Gonzo( CATHOLIC CHURCH ) A rule was passed thast all the soldiers had to salute when he passed in his car. My Dad said that every time he passed in his car he used to shout to his men
'' Right lads.............. fasten your shoelaces '' Apparantly it was noticed and he got in trouble for it.
