(Photo taken in Malta 2002)

When the boat was lowered to rescue the SS Waimarama survivors, Walker, who was a very strong swimmer and captain of the ship's water-polo team, volunteered to go in it. Seeing a non-swimmer about to be engulfed in the flames, he dived overboard with a line and brought him to safety. For this gallant action he was awarded the George Cross. After retirement from the RN he joined the Merchant Navy. He celebrated his 90th birthday recently
Sam Godwin was an anti-aircraft gunner and experienced seaman. He was early chosen to be the ship's "buoy-jumper", the man who jumped from a boat or was lowered over the forecastle in all weathers, day or night, to attach the ship's cable to the mooring buoy, a difficult and sometimes dangerous job. In retirement he became a heavy goods and passenger vehicle driver.
