| | | | |  | John Nixon, Surgeon Lieutenant RNVR Much loved and respected ship's doctor. When the SS Waimarama blew up and sank in an inferno of smoke and flames, he went in the rescue boat to give immediate first aid to many badly burned survivors including some from the SS Melbourne Star. These men never forgot how he saved their lives. After the war he worked for many years as an Opthalmic Specialist in the Wessex Region Hospitals. He died in 2005
